The Vertiflore System in Detail
Our process relies on galvanized steel baskets, wrapped in a rot-resistant M1 mat and filled with a specialized substrate. This substrate, similar to topsoil and requiring no additional nutrients, ensures the plants’ longevity by promoting optimal root establishment while requiring little water. To ensure uniform irrigation across the entire surface of the wall, we incorporate a remotely controlled automatic irrigation system equipped with a line of drippers.
System Configuration
The baskets
These are wire mesh cages (made of 4.8 mm GRAPAL-type or galvanized wire from ARCELOR) with standard overall dimensions of 1 m long, 37 cm high, and 12 cm deep. Vertiflore allows each basket to be removed individually from any point on the wall surface. The baskets are secured to the rail using hooks attached to the basket itself, with tabs on the back that lock directly into the basket below. Lined with a rot-resistant, moisture-retaining mat made of black, thermally bonded plastic fibers, the film has an M1 fire rating and high tear resistance (20 Dn lengthwise, 12 Dn widthwise).
The growing medium
Our growing medium, developed in collaboration with the CNRS, enables the plant to establish a strong root system and foster a thriving bacterial ecosystem with the microbial interactions necessary for its growth. Each plant is provided with 5 liters of soil, and no additional fertilizer is needed for it to thrive. This growing medium consists of 55% mineral material with a density of less than 0.8. The mineral component is supplemented with 8% of a palygorskite-type water-retaining agent and 37% of bacterial inoculant and slow-release organic fertilizer. It is known for its very low water consumption (ranging from 0.3 L to 2.5 L per square meter per day). Our growing medium contains no sphagnum moss, peat, or expanded polystyrene.
The Irrigation System
The Vertiflore irrigation system uses a dense dripper network with drippers spaced 40 cm apart vertically and 15 cm apart horizontally. This ensures balanced irrigation across the entire wall, optimizing irrigation times and conserving water by providing each plant with exactly what it needs. Watering is managed by a controller that activates the solenoid valves located in a utility room. Our walls are connected via a remote management system (PRO HC by HUNTER), which provides daily status reports and alerts in the event of a problem.
Fastening Systems
Mounting on a load-bearing wall
The rails are secured to the wall using anchor bolts and are suspended from the load-bearing wall at two attachment points. Their primary function is to support the planters. They are custom-manufactured in our factory according to the wall width and construction drawings. They leave a 6-cm air gap between the load-bearing wall and the green wall, ensuring ventilation between the wall and the planter. The rail is made of ARCELOR’s S235 hot-dip galvanized steel (Magnelis type) at 310 g/m². It is 2.5 mm thick.
Wall Mounting with Exterior Wall Insulation
When exterior wall insulation is present, we install galvanized steel brackets. These brackets support the omega channels, which are arranged vertically. They are secured using a system of bolts and nuts. The omega channels are attached to the rails using self-tapping screws. The omega channels are made of ARCELOR S235 “Magnelis” steel with a coating weight of 310 g/m². Customized according to the plans, they have a standard length of 2.4 m and a profile width of 6 cm. The sheet metal is 2.5 mm thick hot-dip galvanized steel.
Self-Supporting Wall Mounting
When the wall cannot support the green wall mounting, we install IPN beams anchored to the floor (with the option of adding anti-tilt brackets to reduce the size of the IPN beams). These IPN beams are machined before galvanization so they can support the Vertiflore system’s rails, and are assembled using bolts and nuts.
